Understand AI use in context. Develop practical guidance and clearer decision-making.
Colleges and universities are making decisions about where and how AI fits into teaching, research, administration, and student services. Institutional policies and approved tools provide a starting point, but faculty, staff, and students still face questions about appropriate use, privacy, access, and who to turn to when expectations are unclear.
Human Latitude combines human-centered research with AI governance principles to understand how people are using AI, where it may be useful, and where questions remain. We help teams examine how existing guidance works in practice and identify where clearer expectations, decision processes, training, or other support would help.
AI Practice + Governance Assessment
A focused research and strategy engagement for institutions and academic or administrative units developing or refining guidance, governance, and support for responsible AI use.
We start with what is already in place: tools, guidance, training, and policies. Through research and facilitated working sessions, we work with faculty, staff, and institutional teams to examine AI practices, work through dilemmas, and identify where guidance, decision processes, and support could be clearer or more useful.
Methods are tailored to the engagement and may include interviews, surveys, review of existing resources, and workshops.
This may be useful if…
- You have AI tools and policies in place, but aren’t sure how well they address the questions people encounter.
- Different units are developing their own practices and need clearer expectations or coordination.
- Your team needs to assess where AI could be useful and where it may be inappropriate.
- Leadership needs a clearer basis for decisions about guidance, training, or governance.
What you leave with
- Research findings on AI practices, stakeholder needs, use cases, concerns, and unresolved questions.
- An assessment of how existing guidance, training, and governance support responsible AI use in the context of people’s work and responsibilities.
- Practical recommendations for addressing gaps and opportunities, building on existing institutional policies and responsibilities.
- An action plan identifying priorities, proposed responsibilities, and next steps.
Depending on the engagement, we can also help teams develop or refine responsible-use guidance, clarify decision processes, or identify training priorities. Scope and deliverables are agreed at the outset.
A Human-Centered Approach to AI Governance
AI governance needs to account for how people teach, conduct research, learn, and carry out their work. Our approach brings different perspectives, including uncertainty and skepticism, into discussions about institutional responsibilities and everyday decisions.
This work complements AI committees, IT teams, teaching and learning centers, and institutional leadership by providing research capacity, facilitation, and an outside perspective.
